Origanum vulgare (Wild Marjoram)
UK Native Wildflower
Description
Wild marjoram has famously aromatic, tasty leaves, beautiful edible flowers, and it’s also long-flowering and pretty enough to earn its keep in several places in the garden here. A brilliant filler for vases, it’s also one of the richest sources of pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies. This is a hero plant.
Care Tips
It grows well throughout the UK on sunny, dry, infertile, alkaline soils. Look for it on chalk or limestone grassland, hedge banks, woodland edges and scrub. In early spring, before the plant starts to grow again, cut back the old flowering stems.
